Yoruba Youth Council Condemns Attempts to Undermine Nigeria’s Democracy

The Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) has condemned recent calls for the removal of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as baseless and counterproductive. The council expressed concern that such demands, surfacing shortly before the Ondo State governorship election, could destabilize the democratic process and undermine national interest.

YYC President, Comrade Eric Oluwole, criticized the trending hashtag #YakubuMustGo on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as an unwarranted attack on Prof. Yakubu’s integrity and a calculated attempt to disrupt INEC’s operations at a critical time. “These calls are not only unfounded but appear politically motivated, targeting a man who has dedicated himself to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy,” Oluwole stated.

Highlighting Prof. Yakubu’s track record, the YYC applauded his commitment to impartiality, accountability, and transparency, which have significantly enhanced the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process. His reforms have drawn international recognition, positioning the country’s democracy on a stronger footing.

The council warned that the push for Prof. Yakubu’s removal threatens to reverse the progress achieved under his leadership, including the reduction in election-related violence through peace accords and the fostering of peaceful elections. The YYC emphasized that these achievements deserve recognition, not unwarranted criticism.

Passing a vote of confidence in Prof. Yakubu, the YYC reaffirmed its unwavering support for his leadership of INEC. The council called on Nigerians to reject these disruptive calls and focus on safeguarding the gains made in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“The Yoruba Youth Council stands firmly with Prof. Yakubu and urges all Nigerians to recognize his contributions to our democracy,” Oluwole concluded.
